960 door opening mechanism

MessageAuthor

Help please! I have a 960 CD 3ltr estate 96 model 140k on the clock and I have `at the moment' a small problem I need to investigate. The drivers door opening mechanism is working ok. but the lever handle, on the inside of the car, used to operate the mechanism does not return to its normal position, I think the return spring has probably broken allowing the lever to `flop about.' I am inclined to leave it as it is still operating the door mechanism, but if it is some advanced warning that there is more trouble ahead I would rather pick my time to resolve the problem What lies ahead dealing with door trim etc. any advise appreciated. Paul-C

You might not need the spring, I found that it was just a case of drying grease and grime. It is a little difficult to get the exterior handle off, but once it was apart, soak the parts in some cleaner and lubed and oiled the worked just like new. Lubricate the window mechanism while the interior panel is off too. Gradually had to do all four doors on mine. DanR '94 964 334,000 miles (100,000 on the new engine)

Perhaps, but I'm damned if I could work out how with the door card in place, although I did try. Took only a few minutes with the door card off. Perhaps the later cars are slightly different? I don't know.

Thanks for the responce `threaders' I have enough info to check the problem out. Intended doing it this weekend but received a call from the grandson, he wants his Fiat Punto servicing and he says "he's first"" so I will attack the door later later Again thanks Paul-C
