wobbly rear end

My V70 has developed a worring tendancy for the back end of the car to sway and wobble, particularly over bumps. There also seems to be a rumbling and knocking sound too. Any ideas?

No worries on that score, she NEVER washes the car and don't ask her where the fuel cap is...so, the chances of her logging on here are none existant.

Thanks everyone. Had it towed away to Rybrook by the RAC. They diagnosed a burst shock absorber! Not very good on a 40000 mile car! I continue to be underwhelmed with the reliability of these latest Volvos.
