Gearbox Conversion

Hi, My question is can I change my BW55 (I think) 3 spd auto gearbox in a 1979 Volvo 244 DL to a AW70/71 3spd and overdrive / 4spd auto box? I really want to get more MPG but love the car to bits! Is this conversion possible, how much work is involved, will the new box fit? Any help would be fantastic :)

Yes it will fit - I think you will need the prop as well. It is just a gearbox swap - not to easy if DIY I would go the route of engine and box out and swap on the ground. Mike

BW51 to AW71 

Hi. If you do go for the more advanced AW71 setup, you will also have to take into account the speedo drive, which on your BW55 box is driven with a speedo CABLE, the later AW71 setup on the 200 series, takes the speedo readings from a sensor mounted in the rear axle, this is then connected to the later type speedo electronically not with a cable. hello there, I've done this a few times, try to get a hold of a glt axel and re-bush it while it's off the car, they always need to be done eventually, the wiring is faily simple to do, the gearbox is just a a nut and bolt job, it takes about a weekend to do the whole lot, but it is well worth it. Try to get someone to give you a hand from the club
