Rear End Ratios

MessageAuthor

driving my 945 24TD i keep looking for 6th gear. While out driving with Jimosine the other day we were talking about rear ends and rear end ratios. Jim thinks his new rear end is different from the old one. So this got us thinking which car has the highest ratio rear axle? Also will a 960 IRS dif internals fit into a live axle rear end? Finally which car had the LSD i know the sports 945 had but there are only 500 of them so which other cars had the LSD. OOOPS finally and finally how do we identify one dif from another and i dont mean IRS from Live axle i mean ratios and LSD are there part numbers stamped on these units or what? thanks

RE: Rear End Ratios

yes , CWP are the same , any car with a 1041 tag on the axle has the eaton G80 locker , which is the same as the sports 940 . most youl find in the wentworth . 3.54 is the most common manual estate/saloon ratio 3.73/3.89 is the next most common with automatic . supposedly some manual estates had 3.3 diffs with the low ratio M90 box , but mine is and it doesnt have a 3.3 . there ya have it fitting an IRS CWP can be done , BUT , most are auto and will have 3.73/3.89 . the 760 GLE apparently so jim tells me are 3.3 , so thats the one to go for . have you checked you axle identification tag ? the others to check are the 240 , but the early ones have a weaker crownwheel , they come in a variety of ratios , best to use post 90 , as it uses the same center section as the 7/9 series .

Thats given us lots to think about especially when you've got a 92 Wentworth & a 97 with M90 sat up the garden doing nothing. Priorities must get electric fans on the 94 D24TIC first. :)
