I have a 1989 ( G Reg ) 240 GL Estate with a Volvo CR-702 radio/cassette player fitted. When the radio is switched on it just continuously scans. If I am quick I can sometimes push a button to stop the scan on a station, but once I have done this all buttons become useless, they will do nothing! Then If I switch radio off and back on again it reverts to scanning again. Is radio done for? I would like to replace it but can someone explain how I go about removing it?
It could be that yes. But I think the radio has had it. It just keeps scanning and no buttons I press can stop it. It worked fine up until about a week ago. I would like to replace it now but cannot fathom out how to remove it!
Is the aerial and/or aerial lead & connections OK? These units tend to keep scanning if they cant get a strong enough signal - for example if the aerial connection has come adrift etc...........
The aerial is the rear n/s screw on type, mounted to side of car near roof. Like I said all was fine till about a week ago. I did take car through car wash and did unscrew aerial first and re-fitted it after going through wash. I still think the radio is the problem though. I'm just not sure, and I don't want to got to expense of replacement if I end up with same trouble.
If the radio is in the upper position then you can remove it by firstly pulling off the trim surrounding the clock. This will give you access to two screws that hold the face plate secure, the other end of the face plate just clips in. Then you need to remove the glove box, open the door and remove all the screws around the edge and pull towards you. This will give you access to the rear of the radio where it may well be secured to a bracket. You can also access the harness this way as well. If in the lower position you remove the two kick panels on either side and release any screws that are in the side so that it can be pulled out forward. But it does sound like a stuck button. Possibly taking it apart and cleaning may sort it out? It's close to 20 years old, it may just want a bit of TLC.

Well I have managed to successfully remove the radio and have cleaned it up etc. I will refit it very soon. If it still gives me the same trouble I will have to look at maybe replacing the aerial???? It is the type that is mounted on the uppper rear l/h side panel. There is like a black mounting that the aerial can be unscrewd from. Would I just need to replace the unscrewable bit or the whole lot including cable? If the latter how do I go about doing this?
If you are thinking about replacing the radio anyway, why not replace it with a modern radio/CD player? On my 240, the radio was fitted in the higher position and the whole job took a few minutes over half an hour which included removing the glove box, old radio, enlarging the aperture with a hacksaw blade, fitting the new unit, conneceting and tuning it and re-fitting the glove box. Admittedly, I made use of the original speakers, but they are brilliant anyway. (I'm a firm believer of the maxim, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it.")
