Having driven a couple of 850's since graduating from 740's and 940's I'm interested to find out which trim /version would be the most powerful non-turbo model. I would assume it would be using the 2.5 20v engine but after that I am confused. Is it the GLT or is that a turbo model? Does the CD have a less sporty set up? Or is it just that to get a sporty drive you've got to really focus upon a turbo model? Can anyone guide me further. Thanks Charles
Correct,, the 2.5 20valve is the most powerful non turbo with 173 BHP, the GLT is the trim level. In order it goes from basic to GLT then GLE then CD. GLT/GLE are similar with slightly different specs, the CD is the best spec with a combination of both, but 'packs' can be added. The best spec in the 850 range is the R but they were all turbo. If you want the most power out of the 2.5 20v then go for a manual but they are rare.
Thank You. So I guess it's really a case of first finding a 2.5 20v and then checking the GLE or GLT or CD spec to work out what 'goodies' you prefer. I asked since having driven both 2.5 and 2.0 10v I know I enjoyed the extra power of the 2.5 and as I'm probably looking at a +100k miler (nothing for a volvo I know) I would prefer the non-turbo design. I think that some items became deleted as the model went into the mark 2 version, since a '94 2.5 SE I owned had a manual s/roof and manual windows wheras a 2.0 (base) '96 I owned had elec glass s/r and 4 x elec windows. Oh well, that's the confusing nature of Volvo's I guess. Thanks again.
I guess that it's those oddities and quirks of the original owners options that make ownership of second/third hand cars so much more interesting. It can be rather like opening pressies at xmas, what has santa brought for you. I owned a bmw 735i SE a few years ago, ( in e32 form the nearest the German company ever got to volvo strength and reliabilty - bomb proof) and I was chuffed to find it kitted out with rear side window blinds and front sports leather seats. Oh well, a big kid at heart I'd guess! Great car - can take 200k + and every electrical component will still be working. rgds Charles
ive got the 2.5 cd only the 10 valve but im happy with the power,as for the goodies cant think what its not got electric everything, leather, walnut dash ,tbh its the only car i have been hard pushed to find something it needed .i did find some nice stainless goodies for the engine but dont tell the wife LOL:Banane32:
Hi I have a 1996 858 2.5 20valve CD. I am extremely happy with it . It has all the bells and whistles I wanted. Leather. air con, walnut dash, alarm/immobiliser,electric sunroof, electric windows all round. abs, etc, etc. It goes like a steam train and the only things I have done to it in over a year of ownership is a new set of disks and pads all round and changed the oil. It sounds superb when you give it a bit of stick. So I cannot recommend one enough. Steve
i heard the 2.5 10v is a bit more livly on take off? is this true compared to the 20v although dont have first hand knowledge, apparently 10v nippier on low revs 20v great in high revs ? any1?
